County of Brant Tree By-Laws
No matter what type of tree care required, it is very important to abide by Brant County's Tree Maintenance and Tree Conservation By-Laws.
Did you know? If you’re living near a highway and you’d like to perform tree care, you must ensure to abide by the tree maintenance by-law.
For example, if your tree branch extends over the highway, you must call the Brant County Public Works department to either trim the branch on your behalf, or supervise the work being performed. If Public Works decides that your tree needs to be removed as its impeding with the highway function, Public Works will give you a 10 day notice prior to the removal. If, however it is an emergency situation, no notice will be given and the branch, or your tree will be removed.
Did you know? Before cutting down trees in a Woodlot, you must ensure that the removal of these trees is not prohibited by the tree conservation by-law. A woodlot is defined as an area of 0.2 to 1 hectares. A list of various trees requiring permission for removal can be found in the tree conservation by-law. A “Notice of Intent to Cut” is required to be submitted to the county clerk prior to the removal of any tree from the Woodlot. This notice will then be evaluated by the forestry officer.

Top 3 reasons not to plant your tree too close to your House
#1 Structural or Mechanical Damage
So you want to plant a tree in your yard. You’re imagining this tree being there for generations and all the kids playing on it. You google the various type of trees to plant and realize there are hundreds of options. One thing you really need to keep in mind is how big this tree will get once its fully grown. The bigger the tree, the bigger the root system will be underneath the ground. This root system will spread wildly and will be looking to go into any direction where it can get moisture and nutrients necessary for the tree to survive. This means if the foundation of your home is in the way or any utility services such as water or gas, the roots will create tremendous pressure against these. Depending on the size of the tree and the strength of the roots, this can become a serious problem and even create damage. Before purchasing and planting a tree, have a clear idea of how big the tree usually gets and the circumference of its roots underground. Feel free to give us a call and our friendly Certified Arborist can help you with any tree planting questions. It costs nothing to talk and we love answering questions and spreading the tree knowledge.
#2 Property Damage due to branches or fallen Tree
Even though we don’t have a hurricane season here in southern Ontario, we do get our fair share of strong winds. If during these wind storms a branch becomes loose and snaps off, it becomes a large projectile that could end up on your roof, fall on your car, or go through your window. This will undoubtedly cause property damage that your insurance might not cover. Even worse would be if a whole tree is uprooted and it lands on your home. Again, as in the previous point, the bigger the tree the bigger the damage. Another reason why it’s very important to have your trees assessed. Our Certified Arborist can tell you about the risk of your tree being uprooted, its health, as well as identify any branches. When planting a new tree, please keep in mind how big it will get and the proximity of its branches and trunk to your home, garage, shed, or anything else valuable. We all love the shade it provides, but it can become dangerous as well. If you’re ever in a tree emergency, you can count on Tree Service Brantford.
#3 Big Clean up
When fall roles around, it seems that the leaves never stop falling. If you have a big tree in your yard, it may seem like you’re filling up those leaf bags every single day and there’s no end in site. While planning out your tree planting, make sure you’re aware of the amount and type of leaves and branches the tree will ultimately have. If you’re enjoying the yard work and the clean up then you may welcome the opportunity. If your feelings are the opposite, you may want to get an all year around tree like a Spruce species. Violent storms, high winds, and weight of the winter snow will cause many branches and twigs to snap. These will end up in your yard and garden. If the tree branches are reaching above your roof, those leaves will end up in the gutter, making them really difficult to clean. If you’re planting the tree a bit further away from your house, you will minimize the amount of time spent climbing up the ladder and cleaning out the gutters.
