STUMP REMOVAL, STUMP GRINDER, STUMP GRINDING CONTRACTOR BRANTFORD, ON

Stumps can be an eye sore in any garden, sometimes even worse than weeds. They can also cause a tripping hazard if camouflaged by grass, weeds, or other plants. Some of the bigger stumps take up valuable space in a garden, which can be used for planting other vegetation or having wide open field of beautiful green grass.

Stump Grinding – It’s a process where the stump is leveled with the ground using a machine called the stump grinder. Think of a large lawn mower with a cutter blade attached to the front. This process is less labour intensive and often less expensive, though some stumps are easier to grind than others such as pine tree stumps compared to deciduous tree stumps for example. The cost and difficulty of the job depend on the size and type of stump to be ground.

Stump Removal – It’s a process where the stump is completely taken out of the ground. The stump is not only levelled with the ground, but its roots are cut and completely removed. This process is a lot more labour intensive. Like with stump grinding, the cost and difficulty of the job depend on the size and type of stump to be removed. For example, pine tree roots tend to be wide, flat and fairly shallow, while deciduous tree stump roots tend to be long and deep in the ground.

Is Stump Grinding dangerous?

In short, yes it can be very dangerous.  As mentioned above, stump grinding is achieved by a large machine called the Stump Grinder. Whenever you're dealing with large machinery, there is a risk factor involved. This grinder is very powerful and it will send debris flying in all directions. By not using the proper safety gear, the operator could be in a lot of trouble. Safety boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection is a must. We also recommend long pants and long sleeves. The typical stump grinder has guards around the blade in order to prevent the debris hitting the operator. However, a lot of times the wood chips can ricochet off of a fence for example. At the speed that these pieces are travelling, they could become like a bullet and get embedded in the exposed skin.

A very important factor in safety is following the manufacturers machinery recommendation. Knowing the placement of the on/off switch as well as the emergency switch, can be the difference between a no incident and a serious injury. Listening to the machine while being operated is crucial. The machine should be running smoothly without any jerky movements. When changing out the blade of the grinder, please wear gloves and ensure the blade is placed properly and fastened tightly. Lastly, a very important factor for safety would be your surroundings. Please ensure there are no individuals walking around or in front of the area of the stump grinding. This is especially important if children are near by.  The machine is very loud and the operator will not hear the individual or the child approaching. Even after the stump grinder is shut off, the blade is still spinning and could potentially cause damage, hence please wait until the blade has stopped spinning prior to getting near it. By following a few simple safety rules, everyone will stay safe and the job will be done without incidents.
