TREE TRIMMING, TREE PRUNING, TREE MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR BRANTFORD, ON

Just like humans need the regular hair cut, for those not follicly challenged of course, the trees and shrubs require regular maintenance as well.

Trimming and pruning your trees and shrubs helps them stay healthy, maintain their shape and structural stability, and significantly increase their aesthetics. There are various different trimming and pruning techniques to be used depending on the tree and the desired outcome. For example, there’s Crown Raising, Crown Thinning, or Crown Reduction. Each of these can be achieved using a slightly different pruning system.  Failing to apply proper techniques, may end up hurting the tree and that can start a long road of various problems such as fungi collection, disease, dead branches, and eventual death of the tree.

At Tree Care Brantford, taking care of your vegetation is a passion. We have numerous customers whose gardens we service regularly and these trees grow on us (pun fully intended). Over time we develop a feel for the tree, get to know its weak spot and where it needs extra care. As we take care of it, we get to watch it grow and become healthier. It’s a very satisfying process.

You may not need regular service and just have a dead branch that needs trimming. No problem. We have bucket trucks and master tree climbers that can trim even the hard to reach branches. As always, we ensure that safety is number 1. We use all necessary safety equipment to tie off ourselves and the dead branch that will be cut soon. Let our 15 years of experience work for you.

Common Tree Trimming Mistakes Homeowners Make

Like with any technique and method, there's a correct way and an incorrect way to do it. Let us go over a few mistakes most homeowners make when trimming and pruning their own trees.

  1. Use Dull and Dirty Tools -  Even though trees are part of nature and get dirty as a result of course, using dirty tools to cut the tree's branches can actually infect the tree with bacteria and other diseases. Tree branches are living organisms and they can get sick. There's a reason the outside of a branch is crusty and strong compared to the inside, kind of like humans.  You may think of someone in your life who is crusty and strong on the outside but tender and sensitive on the inside. That is every tree. That's why it's also very important that your tool is sharpened properly.  A good cut will allow the tree to recover properly from the "surgery".  A dull tool where you're just hacking away on the branch, will hurt that tree. It's very important to use good equipment because tools really make the job
  2. Randomly selecting branches to trim-  When a trimming job is started out, the goal is not to go around the tree and look at the dead or weak branches and then just chop'em away.  There has to be a strategic approach achieved to the pruning. The risk of trimming a bit here and a bit there is leaving the tree in a weakened state and risking further injury to the tree, during a storm for example. A Certified Arborist can tell you exactly which branches need trimming and where to cut them in order to maintain your tree healthy and strong.
  3. Cutting through the Branch Collar -  Let us first explain what a branch collar is. It's the part that connects the branch to the tree trunk. Just like our bodies have blood vessels to keep us kicking, a tree and branches have vessels where nutrients are being passed through. Majority of these vessels are located in the branch collar. If you try and cut the branch flush with the trunk, you will hurt the tree and it will actually "bleed" sap. This is  a wound that's hard to close for a tree. Whenever cutting a branch, please leave a stump of about 1-1.5 inches from the tree trunk. This ensures the vitals are kept in tact and the tree can heal properly
  4. Picking a bad time of year to trim -  Winter is usually the best time to trim your tree. During this season, the tree is not as active and one could say it's hibernating. If the tree is cut, it will not "bleed" or suffer as much. Additionally, during the colder months, the bacteria and small insects are not as rich in population. Just imagine in the warm months if you cut a branch and provide a fresh and easy passage way for all these small organisms to pass into the tree. They can negatively affect the health of a tree in no time. So if you're trimming, try to do it during colder months.
